Ozone Technology – Glacier Ozone

1 - What is ozone?

Ozone (O₃) is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms. The oxygen we breathe (O₂) contains two atoms. When oxygen is exposed to a germicidal UV lamp, it temporarily transforms into ozone. The third oxygen atom is unstable and seeks to attach itself to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are responsible for odours. It neutralizes them by destroying their cell walls, then simply reverts back to pure oxygen (O₂). No chemicals, no residue.

Glacier Ozone Canada generators use a fan to push ambient oxygen over high-powered, high-intensity germicidal UV lamps. This produces ozone, which is then dispersed into targeted areas. The ozone destroys odour-causing molecules (VOCs), as well as bacteria, mold, and viruses.

Ozone is very effective at neutralizing odors because it actively interacts with organic matter. It should never be used in an enclosed space occupied by humans or animals. It dissipates quickly in open air, leaving only pure oxygen.

No. The ozone used in our generators is produced on-site, leaves no chemical residue, and reverts back to oxygen. There are no toxic emissions or documented negative environmental impacts.

Yes. Ozone generators have been used for decades in post-disaster cleanup, fire restoration, and automotive services, precisely because they completely eliminate stubborn odours.

Ozone has a slight, recognizable fresh smell, often described as “oxygenated”. It is noticeable even at very low concentrations, well below regulatory exposure thresholds.

Yes. Ozone disrupts the respiratory system of insects and some rodents, causing them to avoid treated areas. It is also effective against mould, bacteria, and viruses.

Ozone oxidizes the cell walls of organic pollutants, destroying them at a molecular level. It acts without chemicals, without contact, and without leaving residue.

The effects are noticeable immediately. The recommended duration depends on the size of the space and the intensity of the odors. Most odors are eliminated in less than 3 hours. Mold may require up to 30 hours of cumulative treatment.

The generators operate on a standard 120V outlet. Each unit comes with an 8-foot cable, certified for outdoor use. No dedicated circuit required.

No. The units can be programmed using a preconfigured multifunction timer, delivered ready to use.

Yes. Germicidal UV lamps do not require dry air, unlike corona discharge models. They are therefore ideal in humid conditions and have been tested down to -6 °C (20 °F) without any loss of performance.

With regular preventive maintenance (as indicated in the manual), the units last for many years. High-power germicidal UV lamps have a lifespan of approximately 10,000 hours, or about 18 months of continuous use.

No. The only wear parts are the high-power germicidal UV lamps, the ballasts, and the air filters. All are affordable and easy to replace.

Ozone can accelerate the degradation of certain natural materials such as rubber. Preferably use ozone-resistant polyurethane or PVC tubing near the units.
